This course involves three on-site visits to the papal basilicas of St Mary Major, St Paul outside the Walls and St John Lateran, with an eye to preparing tours for the numerous pilgrims expected for the upcoming Jubilee Year 2025. The visits will situate the ancient churches in their historical contexts, then look at the meaning of their architectural choices before recounting the rich yet complex stories of their decoration. There will be special focus on relics, saints and other aspects that would be of interest to pilgrims as well as the art historical treasures that make the churches fascinating to tourists. The vision of these tours is to see each basilica as having its own story and learning how to recount that story in relation to the great history of the Eternal City.

Elizabeth Lev studied art history at the University of Chicago and the University of Bologna and has taught art history at Duquesne University’s Rome campus since 2002. She also teaches at the Pontifical University of St Thomas Aquinas and Christendom College. She has written many books and articles, including A Body for Glory: Theology of the Body in the Papal Collections with Fr Jose Granados. She has lectured on the Vatican Museums worldwide, including a TED talk which has garnered over a million views. She has just returned from a four-month fellowship at University of Notre Dame where she has been working on another book, The Pope’s Art, about the history of the Vatican collections.
